Thursday on DelmarvaLife, we learned more about toy safety. While they can be fun for our little ones, many toys can also pose quite the danger. Pediatrician Dr. Lisa Yamakawa joined Lisa and Jimmy on the couches to talk more about the dangers.
When it comes to children swallowing magnets, Dr. Yamakawa says, “One magnet isn’t the problem- but if there are two in there, some of these small “rare earth” magnets are pretty strong and can actually attract each other from different sections of the bowel and cause a perforation or an obstruction. Your standard alphabet letters on the fridge with the little black magnet strips on the back are not going to be an issue though- they have to be fairly strong magnets.”
Batteries, including button batteries, can also cause quite a bit of concern. Dr. Yamakawa says, “The riskiest [batteries] are actually the ones about 1-2 inches in size- they can get lodged in the esophagus and when they’re sitting in one place like that for a long time, the battery actually creates a circuit with the tissue and causes a burn. Little tiny ones are more likely to pass through, and big ones are just less likely to get swallowed- and small children usually can’t generate enough force to actually bite through the casing.”
