Friday on DelmarvaLife, we learned more about the Zika Virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild, with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.”
Scientists have confirmed the Zika Virus can cross the placenta during pregnancy, and is suspected of being able to cause birth defects to the child, particularly microcephaly, which is an abnormally small head and underdeveloped brain at birth. The CDC has issued new interim guidelines regarding Zika. If you are concerned about the Zika Virus, contact your doctor.
